Students from Smoketree Elementary have joined Pennies for Peace, a fundraising program that promotes education in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The students study the cultures and raise money for them at the same time.
A fourth grade teacher, interested in helping the foreign schools, brought the program to the school. She explained to the students how just one penny would buy a pencil over in Pakistan and Afghanistan, 15 cents could by a notebook, $600 would a teacher’s annual salary, and $5,000 would support an existing school for one year.
